The Design Story of NIO's EP9

30 november 2021 by NIO

NIO's EP9 has broken lap records at multiple well-known circuits. Before its debut in 2016, our global design and engineering team worked extremely hard to beat the deadline and brought this extraordinary car to reality.

Unlike other race and supercar designs, the NIO EP9's design used a radically different approach. Our design team worked on the interior first, then the exterior of the vehicle. This approach helped us push the limits on new technologies, which propelled us even further.

Kris Tomasson, the Vice President of Design, states, "It's about looking at things through a different lens, driving yourself harder to think about what we are doing. We were creating something completely from scratch for the future."

There were many obstacles and challenges we had to face during the process and find a way to solve the problems. William Li, the founder, and CEO mentioned, "Of course, this is a challenging task, and there were many challenges. But, just like our NIO EP9 spirit, 'Born to Push Limits.'"

On October 14, 2016, when we first broke the fastest electric car lap record at Nürburgring Nordschleife, you can see and feel the joy among everyone who was part of this outstanding achievement. With NIO's EP9 spirit, the whole team integrated the design with the most advanced technologies, which paved this incredible success.

On December 4th, the NIO EP9 is finally coming to the United States. It will be showcased at the Petersen Museum in Los Angeles, California. The "Hypercars, The Allure of The Extreme" exhibition features the Lamborghini Centenario, Koenigsegg Agera and Regera, McLaren Speedtail, Ferrari LaFerrari, Bugatti Veyron, and a selection of these rarified, ultra-elite vehicles, exploring their manufacture and their capabilities, and hinting at what greatness is still to come.
